To act or not to act, that's the question

By CHOK SUAT LINGsling@nst.com.my
The New Straits Times 2010/06/10

LAST Thursday, a tragic accident occurred in the small hours of the morning along Jalan Cheras, Kuala Lumpur. Florina Joseph, 27, was burnt alive in her Perodua Myvi in the crash, which also involved a Toyota Vios and a lorry.

It was all the more devastating for the young woman's family when it emerged that her death might have been prevented. Reportedly, a passer-by who saw the car on fire had gone to a BH Petrol kiosk situated just 500m away to get help, but the attendants there refused to lend him fire extinguishers.

The man rushed back to the accident scene only to see the car engulfed in flames.
BH Petrol immediately expressed regret over the incident, saying the attendants refused to open their doors because robberies were common at that hour. That was not enough to douse the fiery public condemnation that followed. Some labelled the company "a murderer" and called for a boycott of BH Petrol products and services. Others demanded a formal apology and compensation.

Facebook groups were set up to rally support from Netizens. Public figures jumped on the bandwagon and roundly criticised the inertness of those on duty that day.But is it fair to blame the attendants for having clay on their feet and their hearts in their mouths? For one, they were confronted by a frantic man. It was 3.30am, when ghouls, thieves and Mat Rempit roam.

The accident site was not visible from the kiosk. Was the wildly gesticulating man one seed short of a full congkak set, a serial killer, or worse, not human? Was it a hold-up? Would the man pull out a gun or parang once the door was unlocked? It's not difficult to understand why the attendants were wary. Petrol stations are a favourite target of robbers. Recently, a Pakistani worker at a petrol station in Seremban was killed and his colleague injured when a group of men attacked and robbed them. Not long ago, too, police busted a group of Middle Eastern robbers targeting petrol stations in Kuantan. What about those two men who were shot dead at a petrol station in Changlun, Kedah? Remember the "Ranggi Gang" who terrorised petrol stations in Kuala Lumpur two years ago?

Some petrol companies have gone so far as to install panic buttons linked to the nearest police station in their kiosks. This system has apparently reduced the crime rate in Johor petrol stations by 76 per cent. Perhaps the BH Petrol station isn't equipped with such a system. And how often have we heard stories about those who went out of their way to help others only to end up stabbed, hammered, beaten to a pulp, or dead?

In 2003, a bak kut teh seller tried to be a good Samaritan but ended up dead. Tan Hooi Kee sustained serious head injuries when he valiantly tried to fend off hammer-toting assailants who were attacking another man.Not long before that, two friends were assaulted and slashed by more than 20 foreigners in Petaling Jaya when they reported a commotion at a kongsi to the guard on duty. A. Murugan died, while M. Maniam was seriously injured. And in Klang that year, a trader who responded to shouts for help was killed by the men who were trying to rob his neighbour. It certainly didn't pay for P. Mahalinggam to be helpful.

Some may also remember the young man in Sungai Bakap who rushed to help his elderly neighbour only to be knifed by a robber.Mohamad Faizal Mohamad Zin later succumbed to his injuries.Because of incidents such as these, society has become largely apathetic; not eager to step out of the comfortable and familiar to help those in need. Sometimes, the best thing to do is to do nothing at all. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Don't stop to help that woman gesturing wildly by the roadside. She might be a robber or insurance agent.

Turn the other way when you see snatch thieves stalking a potential victim. They might turn their attention on you instead.

Why think of taking to the veterinarian an injured dog by the roadside if it might very well turn around and bite you?

This attitude is not desirable in a society, but that's the way it is; the way most of us are. So, can we really blame the BH Petrol attendants that day?

What would you have done?

The Worst Words to Say at Work

Some words and phrases are often used to buy time, avoid giving answers, and escape commitment. If you use these words and phrases yourself, take a scalpel and cut them out of your thinking, speaking, and writing.

"Try"
"Try" is a weasel word. "Well, I'll try," some people say. It's a cop-out. They're just giving you lip service, when they probably have no real intention of doing what you ask. Remember what Yoda says to Luke Skywalker in "Star Wars": "Do or do not--there is no try." Take Yoda's advice. Give it your all when you do something. And if it doesn't work, start over.

Put passion into your work, and give it your best effort, so you can know that you did all you could to make it happen. So if the outcome you were expecting didn't come to fruition, it's not because you didn't do everything you could to make it happen. It just wasn't the right time for it or it wasn't meant to be.

"Whatever"
This word is a trusted favorite of people who want to dismiss you, diminish what you say, or get rid of you quickly. "Whatever," they will say as an all-purpose response to your earnest request. It's an insult and a verbal slap in the face. It's a way to respond to a person without actually responding. When you say "whatever" after another person has said his or her piece, you have essentially put up a wall between the two of you and halted any progress in communicating. It's a word to avoid.

"Maybe" and "I don't know"
People will sometimes avoid making a decision--and hide behind words and phrases like "maybe" and "I don't know." There's a difference between legitimately not knowing something and using words like these as excuses. Sometimes during a confrontation, people will claim not to know something or offer the noncommittal response "maybe," just to avoid being put on the spot. If that seems to be the case, ask, "When do you think you will know?" or "How can you find out?" Don't let the person off the hook so easily.

"I'll get back to you"
When people need to buy time or avoid revealing a project's status, they will say, "I'll get back to you," and they usually never do. If people say they will get back to you, always clarify. Ask them when they will get back to you, and make sure they specify the day and time. If they don't, then pin them down to a day and time and hold them to it. If they won't give you a day or time, tell them you'll call in a day or week and follow up. Make sure you call and get the information you need.

"If"
Projects depend on everyone doing his or her part. People who use "if" are usually playing the blame game and betting against themselves. They like to set conditions, rather than assuming a successful outcome. People who rely on conditional responses are fortifying themselves against potential failure. They will say, "If Bob finishes his part, then I can do my part." They're laying the groundwork for a "no fault" excuse and for not finishing their work.
There are always alternatives, other routes, and ways to get the job done. Excuse makers usually have the energy of a slug and the spine of a jellyfish. You don't want them on your team when you're trying to climb Mt. Everest.

"Yes, but . . ."
This is another excuse. You might give your team members suggestions or solutions, and they come back to you with "Yes, but . . ." as a response. They don't really want answers, help, or solutions. You need to call the "Yes, but . . ." people out on their avoidance tactic by saying something like "You know, Jackie, every time I offer you a suggestion you say, 'Yes, but . . . ,' which makes me think you don't really want to solve this problem. That's not going to work. If you want to play the victim, go right ahead, but I'm not going to allow you to keep this up." After a response like that, you can be assured that the next words you hear will not be "Yes, but . . ."!

"I guess . . ."
This is usually said in a weak, soft-spoken, shoulder-shrugging manner. It's another attempt to shirk responsibility--a phrase that is muttered only when people half agree with you but want to leave enough leeway to say, "Well, I didn't really know. . . . I was only guessing." If you use this phrase, cut it out of your vocabulary.

"We'll see . . ."
How many times did we hear our parents say this? We knew they were buying time, avoiding a fight or confrontation, or really saying no. It's better to be decisive and honest by saying, "I need more information. Please present your case or send me the data--both pro and con--so I can make an informed decision." That way, the interested parties will contribute to an in-depth, well-researched "verdict."

5 Things You Might Be Doing to Sabotage Your Relationship

Could you be driving a perfectly good relationship onto a crash course? If you’re participating any of the following five romance-foiling pitfalls, the answer is yes. Instead of steering toward failure, you can increase your chances for a long-term love affair by avoiding these common self-destructive practices.

1. You’re frequently disappointed by your partner’s gifts or gestures.
He might not have the greatest taste in jewelry or the latest fashion and consequently his gifts may fall short of your stylish expectations. But in matters of the heart, it really is the thought that counts. If you want to stay in good favor, be thankful of the effort. After all, nothing discourages gift-giving or spontaneous romantic gestures like real or perceived criticism from the recipient.

2. You focus on his faults.Even Mr. Right is not going to be perfect.
In fact, far from it. A solid relationship is not about verbally beating his flaws out of him any more than it is about him expecting you to change into his “dream girl.” The secret is to learn to love even the things you hate about him—or at least recognize that they are to be embraced as part of the gloriously imperfect package. If you can accept his less savory qualities, he’s more likely to be able to return the courtesy—and that’s an indication of true compatibility. Besides, if it’s the real deal, even his faults may grow into endearing idiosyncrasies.

3. You’re too available or have drastically changed your routine for him.
It might be tempting to spend all your free time with your significant other, especially during the “honeymoon stage.” But losing yourself in your loved one invariably results in backlash, which might include bickering or a loss of interest on his part. Schedule a girl’s night out with your gal pals, don your hottest LBD and sky-scraping heels and leave your man on his own for the night. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder. Plus, maintaining your own identity and routine lets him know you that while you want him in your life, you don’t need him—independence and confidence never stops being attractive.

4. You’ve stopped getting glam for your dates…ever.
As a relationship becomes more serious, what you lose in excitement you make up for in intimacy. There’s something to be said for a cozy movie night at home in which you wear his favorite T-shirt. However, taking the time to don your hottest date night dress or throwing on new lingerie, may breathe new life in your relationship and remind you both of your exciting beginning.

5. You discuss your relationship too much.
Once you’ve moved past the casual dating stage to full-on coupledom, it might be tempting to talk about your relationship more. Beware of discussing the ins and outs of your courtship, asking repeatedly if he is “OK” or obsessing on your relationship’s rough edges. Not to say you shouldn’t have an open communication, but make sure you’re living in the moment and keeping things fun and light on a regular basis. After all, you get what you focus on.

Cocooned in our comfort zone?

Should we blame on the Bumi's Policy?
Should we blame on the National Economic Policy?
or
Should we blame on ourselves because we are 100% satisfied in our comfort zone?

"Brain Drain" - What Say You?

"They are more likely to leave their jobs because of the lack of engagement by the companies hiring them. The lack of engagement refers to issues like lack of appreciation and communication by employers and/or the lack of career direction. The worst thing any employer can do is to welcome his new staff, show him his work station, hand him a job description and leave him without any support," Townend said on Brain Drain issue. Manton Townend is the Manpower Inc managing director (Asia emerging markets)
For me:
  • Lack of appreaciation = lower salary and less benefits after long hours of working
  • Lack of communication = no motivation such as compliment for the excellent job you have done.

Siaran tertunda Salasa : Tragedi Tesco "Ade Aku Kesah!!"

The incident happened on the same day..
Last Saturday afternoon...
2nd of May 2009
After that "very brilliant" JPJ incident..

We both were very hungry..
Ibu told me she is too lazy to cook lunch today...
(1st hint)
She told me she has this cravingness thingy long long time ago..
(2nd hint)
Then, she told me she wanted to try those foods in Waroeng Penyet...
(Voila! i knew what was on her mind!)
Haha!

I drove to Mutiara Damansara and decided to park my car in Tesco Parking Area
coz ibu told me that she wanna buy few things from tesco...
so i won't have to pay for the parking la...
(save budget maa... $4.00 tu skali park)

What i can tell u guys about Tesco Parking is only the patient one will survive..
(betol ke bahse aku nih!)
Maksud aku, org yang sabar je la akan tahan dalam pemburuan mencarik parking kat Tesco ni...
I think sort of normal la for all shopping malls, hypermarkets and even supermarkets
will lack of parking space during Sat and Sun (and Pub Hols)
Normally, for me, will have to make about 5 rounds in the parking area
till i found the unoccupied parking space.

But that day was different...
I entered the parking area and ibu saw one chinese couple..
was pushing their loaded trolley..
I followed that couple until they reached their car which was nearby...
there were 2 cars waiting..
I saw 1 gigantic Harrier and 1 small Wira.. ( if not mistaken..)
So i parked in between those 2 cars and switched on my right signal light so that ppl will notify that the parking is mine...
Of course THE PARKING IS MINE!!!
Still waiting for that couple to unload the trolley...
While waiting for the couple, i usha2 around...
Within few minutes, the couple settled with their things and Vroom they went off...
Confidently, i parked my car..
Satisfied and excited!
(Never thot that, i was gonna get the parking as soon as this one)

Suddenly, i heard someone honked at the back...
I told ibu, "takkan la die nak paking kat sini kot?"
"da konfem2 kite yang follow Cina tadi tu."
Ibu answered, " Entahlah..."
I looked at the back and saw one man including his family inside the car...
(wife+children+granny)
With angry and dissatisfied look (i mean that man lah)
he still honking at me..

My hands were shaking that time...
I was sooooooo damn angry...
That man really pissed me off!!!
Ibu just sat still inside the car...
I just cannot TAHAN anymore...
I decided to confront that haram jadah!
I walked towards him and trying to relax..
I asked him politely with my hands still shaking while holding the car key..
"Encik nak perking kat sini ke?"
He responded angrily,
"YE! MEMANG AKU NAK PARKING KAT SINI"
I tried to tone down my voice even though only God knows how mad i was at that time..
"Tapi encik, saye dah follow Chinese ni dari depan lorong lagi.. dari kat tiang depan tu.."
With a very harsh voice, he answered,
"LORONG APE??!! TIANG APE??!!"
That time i cannot controlled me self anymore...
(dalam hati aku da start to curse b#b* h$r@m j%d*h s$%l pa die ni!!)
I burst out!
KeBabooM!
Explosion!
(a very, very huge and massive one)

(Gambar sekadar hiasan)

Please refer to the below scene:

Fizz yang chummel :YANG ENCIK NI TUNJOK MUKE X PUAS ATI PLAK APSAL?

Encik-yang-jadah-tahap-maksimum: YANG KO TAK PUAS ATI APSAL?

(Eh! Hello! Bodoh! Aku tak puas ati memang la wajeb sebab ngko berebot parking aku..
yang ko tu tak puas ati ngan aku yang innocent lagi berbudi ni apsal lak? Dasar monyet jadi-jadian!)

Fizz yang chummel: APSAL LAK SAYE??!! ENCIK YANG TAK PUAS ATI SKANG NI??!!
HON2 SAYE!!

Encik-yang-jadah-tahap-maksimum: AHHH! DA LAH.. KO NAK PAKING.. PAKING LA...(He scolded me with a very loud voice until everyone can hear!!)

Istri-kepada-Encik-Jadah : TAK PE LA! DA PAKING, PAKING LA!

It happened very fast.
Suddenly, ibu came out from the car and asked with a very normal voice tone,
"Ni kenape ni?"
She stared at Encik Jadah,
" Encik nak parking kat sini ke?"
Encik Jadah answered,
"Tak pe la.. da paking-paking la.."
Fizz yang chummel spontaneously said,
"Klu encik nak sgt, amekla.. saye klua, encik paking la kat sini.."
Encik Jadah responded,
"Tak pe la.. parking la... saye da tunggu lame da kat sini.."
"dah 2 kali da saye round"
Pegi mamposla dengan 2 kali round kat parking tu..
ADE AKU KESAH?!!

He drove his car and i kept staring at the jerk's face until he has gone..
He such an annoying creature!
Big Jerk! Big Bully!

NOTA MAUT:
WTF! It was none of my bisnes u moron!
i saw that couple first and followed 'em to the car.
Whats more did u want to argue??!!
Huh! it is not like "first come first serve" kinda service la bodoh!
What do you expect me to do?
Oleh sebab ko dah tercotok lame kat situ,
so parking tu ko yang punye??!!
Did u think i will give that damn parking space to u?
HELL NO!!
If u were the one who have been following 'em..
Then u have the rights to argue..
If thats the case, i, willingly will take the blame la bongoks!

fyi, the driver is Malay!!
Our own MELAYU!!

Siaran tertunda Isnani : Kereta Peronda JPJ

Last Saturday,
One fine mornin, ibu asked me whether i got plan or not...
I just smiled at her and said, "Takde la.. Ahad ade la.. Nape bu?"
She wanted to bring Embun (our mummy cat) to the veterinary.
We went to Kota Damansara, Klinik Haiwan Dr. Bun..
(Heee heee... Kinda like with the doc's name...)
Unfortunately, the clinic was closed...
Ibu took all the details,
the opening hours and contact number.
We decided to come again next week.

Then, i continued to drive and i took a right turn..
From far, i can saw the JPJ's car already..
The driver was trying to do reverse parking...
(hek eleh macam terer beno)
The good thing, the parking boxes was damn empty..
There were no cars at all...
The bad thing, i got stuck in the middle of the road coz i needed to wait for those
"very brilliant" JPJ officers
parked their car inside the parking box..
I just waited and was not blocking their way...
(Yeah! True! My mum can be a witness)
The weirdest thing, after they have "successfully" parked the car,
(in about few minutes later i guess..)
they honked me as if i have done terrible mistake...
Hey! U guys blind or what?
Can't u see i waited patiently u moron!
I stared at 'em even though i knew that they won't be able to see my angry eyes as
i was wearing sunnies that time..
(wish i can be like cyclops,
only one stare, i manage to melt down all those JPJs including their car)

(Gambar di atas sekadar hiasan semata-mata)

Nota Maut:
WTF! Beso sgt ke ko sampai nak hon-hon aku!
Yang beso pon perot je..
Mane tak nyer, gamaknye nak melantak kat maple Subaidah..
tu yang tak menyempat-nyempat nak parking...
nak mentekedarah!!
Hampeh!!

Siaran tertunda Wahid : Labour Day ! Yay!

haha....
Di kala kalian semua sedang enjoy cuti Hari Pekerja...
Hamba berada di ofis berdepan ngan PC dan juga tugasan yang harus diselesaikan...
Hurm... Pity me....

All of sudden felt one kind..
Office room became very silent and more spacious...
There were only few ppl in the office till u can count 'em

But hey... it was not that bad at all..
Working on Pub Hol..
heee....
I had this crazee idea due to the super duper, hyper and max boringness stuck in the office..
I suggested, " How abour we go for lunch at Ikea?"
( coz suddenly was craving for the meatballs)
always be me & my cravingness ; )
My officemates (name harus dirahsiakan atas sebab2 tertentu) agreed with the idea..
We went there around 11.30 and reached office around 2.15.. haha!
After we had our lunch, my 1st officemate suddenly said she wanna go inside Ikea
and check on the stuff she can buy..
So, me and the 2nd officemate just nodded and said "OK!"
That's why we took about 3 hours for our lunch..
Luckily, our "beloved" boss (remember the lady i told u guys in my previous post)
was not in office that day...
She was on leave..
